Ms. Texas Senior America 2010
Paula was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, and was raised in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Kansas. Paula graduated from Central High School in Jackson, Mississippi. In 1966, she was an eye witness to history.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., led a march down Capital Street in Jackson, Mississippi, where Paula was attending school. She remembers waving to the marchers as they passed by.
Because of the racial upset that year, Paula's high school class became the only class to graduate from Central High School without a senior prom. Forty years later, Paula helped organize a "belated senior prom." Did she have fun? She said, "All I can tell you is what I used to do all night, took all night to do."
Paula's comment on aging ....As we all do, I have had my share of midlife crisis. Someone asked me how many can one woman have? She replied, "As many as I want, because if momma ain't happy, no one is happy!"
Paula bought her dream car that she had wanted all of her life, a T-Bird convertible. She and her husband have a multiple best-in-show winning Harley Davidson Chopper Trike. She took up competitive power lifting and benched 95 pounds and dead lifted 195 pounds, winning first place in her weight and age group.
Paula says ...."As I grow older, the word that best describes me is ... determination. Don't tell me I can't, because I will." She has come to realize it doesn't matter where you go in life, it is who you have beside you that counts and her family is everything.
She and her husband, Jim, have been married for 23 years. She has one son and four daughters. She lost two of her daughters early in their lives. They suffered from a neurological illness caused by Agent Orange that was sprayed during the Vietnam War. She has two step-sons, three daughters in-law, one son in-law and six beautiful grandchildren which keep her young!
Paula is a working lady and has been a hair stylist for 44 years. She loves what she does by bringing out the inner beauty of a person and making them feel good about themselves.
One of her goals is to be the best in whatever she is doing. In 2008, Paula was awarded Top Hair Stylist. She was the official hair stylist for the Ms Senior America Pageant 2008 - 2009.
